haiku wednesday - June 4, 2008

This week's words are
deny
smile
uncomfortable

It's tough to write 5-7-5 haiku when you have to use a five-syllable word. I had a little trouble with "deny" combined with these words because denial isn't just a negative response but a refusal or a withholding, which implies a bit more active conflict. When eight of your 17 syllables are determined for you, well... I have to smile and can't deny that it can get uncomfortable! I think these are the hardest words yet. For me, anyway. But still, thanks to bone for the challenge!

smile and deny it
uncomfortable silence
who did move my cheese?

fake jumbotron smile
crowd is uncomfortable
you'll deny my love?

crack a pained, red smile
uncomfortable, itchy
why deny Prep-H?

I have to agree that the words did seem to be a challenge this week. You did well though!

You did it very well. Writing a haiku with such constrains is never easy.

You did great! I agree, they were a challenge.

You are very humble because I liked all three. I must admit the third one was a hoot.

I'm a fellow Californian too.

mmmm, the last one was like ice cream on a hot summers day. Prep-h? No one can deny it. LOL

Thumbs up.

ok that last one made me itchy! ;o)

And for some reason I've been having a hard time accessing your blog. I kept getting an invalid address message until I finally I got you now! It was weird!

I like how irreverent these are. It takes guts to use words like jumbotron and Prep H. You got a laugh out of me.

Pete, how does this work?

Are you given words you must include?

wow, am I way behind...

Thanks, everyone, for the comments! Seems like most of my visitors like hayden christensen... sorry, I mean butt crack jokes. #3 is definitely the one most called out. Not sure I'd agree that it's like "ice cream on a hot summers day" though...

The cheese one is a lame reference to the motivational book "Who Moved My Cheese." Bonus points if you understood that one. (I mean I get the bonus points. You all get full points merely for visiting. Thank you!)

ello, what you are experiencing is the "ello filter," which I turned on today. It randomly zaps visits by you since you picked a fight with me on your blog today. (Just kidding, just kidding. I was having trouble with lots of other blogspot sites yesterday. Maybe it's rolling blackouts or something.)

robin, the rules are posted at Three Word Wednesday. The owner of that site, bone, gives three words each Wednesday morning. The goal is to create something--there seems to be a lot of poetry, but there's plenty of fiction--and blog it, then comment on the 3WW page for that day. It's one of those "I'll visit you if you visit me" type of things, but in general I have found the quality to be pretty good as far as blog memes go.
