This week's Ten on Tuesday theme is favorite movie villains! When I think of my favorite movies, it's rarely for the villains. I mean, really, how are you going to pick a "villain" for a list like this from Mary Poppins, or The Sound of Music, or The Sting (OK, I really liked Robert Shaw as Doyle Lonogan in this, but mostly because of the entire movie, not because he was a particularly outstanding villain). I almost picked Sid, the neighbor kid in Toy Story, but again he didn't rise to the level that I wanted. So here are a few that leapt to mind this morning. I have a feeling my list would be different later in the day after my brain warms up, but... there you go.
In no particular order:
- Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers. "You first."
- John Malkovich as Cyrus Grissom in Con Air.
- Dennis Hopper as Howard Payne in Speed.
- Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor in Superman.
- Anthony Hopkins as William Bligh in The Bounty.
- Bruce Glover at Mr. Wint and Putter Smith as Mr. Kidd in Diamonds Are Forever.
- Richard Kiel as Jaws in various Bond movies.
- Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook in Hook.
- The Predator.
- David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King in The Labyrinth.

Love the list! I have Tim Curry on mine but as Pennywise in It.
Interesting choices - you definitely went off the beaten path. "Jaws" is a good call. (He's on the list I posted too, but in the shark version.)
Excellent list! It was a toss up between Lex and Zod for me; Zod won by *this much*.

Cool list, I didn't have any of these on my list, so I am definately going to have to take a look back at some of these movies.
The Joker in "Dark Knight" was the only one I could think of.

Great list. Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu almost made mine, but didn't survive the final edit. Too many villains. It was tough too keep it at ten.

Nice! Sufficiently obscure as to be self-defining. Lex Luthor seems, to me, pretty iconic.
I don't have a full 10, but I'd definitely include:
--Christopher Walken from TRUE ROMANCE
--Gary Oldman from THE PROFESSIONAL
--Ralph Fiennes from THE RED DRAGON or SCHINDLER'S LIST

Definitely Cardinal Richelieu - love the bit where he reaches for Rebecca de Mornay's cleavage. But I love Tim Curry as Villian better than as not (ie, in Clue)

Tim's Roth's character from Rob Roy
and Dark Helmet
Best villian ever was Alan Rickman in the first Die Hard.

I also briefly thought of the tough-guy sergeant that kills Willem Defoe in Platoon. And the Die Hard villain. And I have to give a nod to the bad guy in the atrocious movie Hot Dog. "I had Sunny side up, Sunny side down, and Sunny side all ze way around." You should only watch that movie if (a) someone else pays for it and (b) you're a 16-year-old boy on a high school ski club trip.
And... Dark Helmet! Yes yes yes! Thanks BT, can always count on you.
I love Tim Curry and David Bowie! The best villian for me is Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness in Legend and David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King. Then there is Alan Rickman, both as Severus Snape and as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
