REJECTED

I failed to interest the small, independent, mid-list publisher in my first novel, "Across the Stream." Their rejection letter says they publish two books per year, and mine didn't make the cut. No indication of how many submissions they get.

Back to the Writer's Market to submit again.

Congratulations - you are a real writer! You have your first rejection letter!

You're the third today to say that. But it still sort of feels like having your boss call you in to his office and telling you, "Congratulations, you are now officially a member of the elite club known as 'job seekers'!"

And, technically, it's not my first rejection letter. It is my first rejection letter for a novel, but not my first overall. In college I submitted a fiction piece to Redbook. They rejected it, but the fiction editor actually sent me a hand-written rejection with comments and encouragement. (At the time, Redbook was a BIG fiction market.)

So I guess now I am officially a "novel writer," seeing as how I officially became a "writer" back in college.
